Home: Roanoke Age: 31 Sign: Scorpio Occupation: Musician Education: A degree in meteorology from North Carolina State University Nominated by: His sister, Angela Mullen. Angela was full of glowing praise for her brother, who is “one of the best guitar slingers in the U.S.,” and has an “overall sweetness that any girl would love.” About Kevin: He sings and plays the guitar, bass, harmonica, drums and trumpet, and he’s committed to music in every sense. A former member of the Fat Daddy Band, Kevin now bides his time between two groups: Little Rodger & The Cheap Thrills and Kevin “The Kid” Selfe and The Tornadoes. He’s been compared to Stevie Ray Vaughan on more than one occasion, and he sits on the committee for the Taste of Blue Ridge Jazz and Blues Festival. He’s been described as “intriguingly square,” yet most people would probably say he’s thoughtful, well-rounded and a lot of fun.
General interests: Swimming, hiking, camping, and, needless to say, music. Weather is also something Kevin keeps daily tabs on. Although he never officially went into the field of meteorology, his friends commonly prefer his predictions to the Weather Channel. Where you’re most likely to find him: Unfortunately, often in bars because that’s where most of his shows happen. He plays the Blues Jam at the Green Dolphin Grille and at many other local venues. When he’s not playing a show, he’s relaxing outside in Smith Park or on the Quad in Blacksburg, cooking on his porch or cozying up with a cup of tea downtown at Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea. Kevin’s routine when he goes out: Two things dictate Kevin’s schedule: Football and his touring schedule. While in college, he was the offensive coordinator for Roanoke Catholic’s varsity football team (they won the state championship in 1994). Football takes precedence, even over his touring schedule. His shows are planned around Redskins games, much to his band members’ dismay. North Carolina State and Virginia Tech games sometimes interfere, too. How long he’s been single: 14 months
Pro of single life: He’s more social, and he can focus more on his music and career. Con of single life: The whole rock-star thing is a myth — it’s next to impossible to meet someone in a bar, and it is difficult to find other places to meet singles. Whom he’d like to meet: A down-to-earth gal with a good sense of humor who can find the upside of most things. Kevin would like to meet a woman who can be spontaneous but is still focused on some sort of goal, knows where she’s going and knows what she wants. In the next five years, Kevin hopes to: Further his career and be in a relationship of some sort with someone who accepts him for who he is. He’d love to stay in the area, but depending on his relationship situation, he could possibly relocate to Portland, Ore. How he rates Roanoke’s single life on a scale of 1 to 5: 3 Why? If you have an imagination, you can make it fun. Best date in Roanoke: He’d fix a dinner of stuffed crab and shrimp with green beans and potatoes and then mosey downtown for a cup of coffee and a low-key music experience that still allowed for conversation. Worst date in Roanoke: It’s a no-brainer — karaoke. How to approach Kevin: If you come to see him play, he’s usually in the back afterward sipping a soda. He’s a bit shy without a guitar in hand, but feel free to be upfront. If you enjoyed his playing or if you didn’t enjoy his playing, just come up, say “hi,” and tell him what you think. And, of course, he’s always up for football talk. Want to talk to Kevin? E-mail roanokes_most_eligible@yahoo.com or call 981-3352 and we’ll hook you up.
