The Roanoke Times

Age: 56

Sign: Libra

Occupation: Assistant credit manager for a credit and collection company

Education: A bachelor's in business administration from Smithdeal-Massey Business College

Nominated by: Friend and co-worker Maggie Sowers. Maggie wrote: "Wanda is a good sport, who's not afraid to laugh at herself. She's a thoughtful person who seems to enjoy doing for others and takes a passionate approach to life. I'd like to see Wanda meet someone she can go out and have fun with, someone who embraces the same zest for life that she does!"

About Wanda: She thrives on challenges and like Joyce Meyer, the evangelical leader and author of the book "Battlefield of the Mind," Wanda "shoots from the hip." She's got a good sense of humor because "if you can't laugh at yourself," she says, "you're not going to make it in life." Generous, Wanda takes pleasure in doing little things for other people, and she likes surprises, both giving and receiving them. Wanda has a Type A personality, but she can still kick back and watch a good football or basketball game, especially if the Redskins, Dallas Cowboys or Duke Blue Devils are playing.

General interests: Her car radio's usually tuned in to Spirit FM or '60s music, and she used to go out dancing when she was younger but hasn't had anyone to go with lately. She saw the advertisements for the Masquerade Ball at Jefferson Center, and she would have gone if she'd had someone to take her. She enjoys antiquing, and she's planning to enroll in a singles cooking class soon. Wanda likes experimenting with new recipes, but she makes a mean black walnut poundcake, and her specialty is Italian food.

Where you're most likely to find her: Watching a suspense thriller like "Derailed," "Collateral" or "The Bourne Supremacy" on a Sunday afternoon, or dining out at Red Lobster, Texas Steakhouse or Applebee's.

Wanda's routine when she goes out: She likes to go to the movies every Sunday.

How long she's been single: Wanda was married for 18 years, and she's been divorced for two years.

Pro of single life: Wanda rarely sleeps a full eight hours, so when she wakes up -- even if it's the middle of the night -- she can do what she wants to. She can watch a movie or read a book, but she doesn't have to worry about fixing someone else breakfast or picking up after anyone.

Con of single life: When you're married, you have your married friends. But when you're single again, you don't seem to have as much in common with them anymore.

Whom she'd like to meet: As independent as Wanda is, she still likes a man who can take charge. Ideally, her mate would be spontaneous, but he would still be able to plan things out when necessary. An adventurous, active man who likes to go to the beach in the fall would fit the bill.

In the next five years, Wanda: Would like to be in a relationship with a man who likes to travel, though retirement is nowhere in Wanda's horizon -- she likes working too much for that.

How she rates Salem's single life on a scale of 1 to 5: 2

Why? "Frankly," Wanda says, "there just don't seem to be that many eligible men."

Best date: If money were no object, Wanda would love to go up in a hot-air balloon with a bottle of wine.

Worst date: Wanda believes in "making the best of the situation." Has she ever been on a date in which she would have rather been home? Sure, but that had more to do with the person she was with than where they were. She would be as happy at KFC as she would be at Red Lobster.

How to approach Wanda: Approaching her with a rose in hand would be nice, but it's not necessary. If you're courageous enough to come up to her, just be genuine.
