Home: Roanoke

Age: 31

Sign: Leo

Occupation: Emergency room nurse at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital

Education: A bachelor's degree in nursing from Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania

Nominated by: Friend Sherrie Pugh. "Jen is a volunteer for Roanoke EMS, where I work as the business administrator," Sherrie said. In addition to being "a reliable volunteer and a happy-go-lucky person," Jen likes to line dance, and Sherrie's sure Jen "would be willing to teach the right gentleman."

About Jen: She's so adventurous that she decided to move to Roanoke while she was on vacation with her mom in Tennessee a few years back. When they passed through Roanoke en route to Monticello, she spotted the trauma unit at Carilion. On a whim, she sent in an online application while in Tennessee. Carilion immediately called her for an interview and before long, she moved down South.

Jen loves to laugh, and her offbeat sense of humor is usually expressed in a series of off-the-cuff remarks. Blessed with a wonderful family, Jen is low maintenance and easy going. She's been told she makes friends too easily, and that's why she's never home.

General interests: Forensic nursing, FBI profiling, American history and the Yankees. She used to root for the Chicago Bulls when Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan were still on the roster.

Where you're most likely to find her: The Cellar, TGI Friday's, Montano's, Cornerstone and inevitably, The Park

Jen's routine when she goes out: She works every other weekend, so when she has a free weekend she likes to get together with friends. When they're not playing spades until 3 or 4 in the morning, they're taking turns fixing a home-cooked meal. Jen's recipes include a sesame chicken dish called Jason's Chicken and a variety of pasta dishes. She bakes extra-good apple pie and chocolate chip cookies, too.

How long she's been single: She's never been married, and it's been about a year since she's dated anyone.

Pro of single life: Jen's always been goal oriented -- so single life suits both her ambition and need for spontaneity.

Con of single life: Not having someone to come home to at night.

Whom she'd like to meet: An open-minded, "take her as she is" man with a good sense of humor. Many of her friends lead alternative lifestyles -- she's tolerant and she expects the people in her life to be, too.

In the next five years, Jen plans: She doesn't have any plans to move anytime soon, but then again, she moved to Roanoke on a whim after living in the same place for nine years. She'd also like to earn a master's degree.

How she rates Roanoke's single life on a scale of 1 to 5: 3

Why? When she lived in Scranton, Pa., she couldn't "spit without hitting a dance club or a disco," but now she seems to always end up at The Park. Outside of downtown, there doesn't seem to be much nightlife in the 'Noke. But Jen says she can't give Roanoke an entirely fair assessment because she works so much.

Best date: On a first date, Jen doesn't really care where you take her as long as you don't have to fight to talk over loud music.

Worst date: Jen's up for a sporting event, the symphony or the theater -- it doesn't really matter. The only place she'd be truly uncomfortable is a strip club.

How to approach Jen: She doesn't do well with subtlety, so sending discreet signals probably isn't going to work. "Talk as you are," she advises. Cheesy lines, however, are not desired, particularly exceptionally tacky ones such as, "Are you an angel? Because I think I just died and went to heaven."
