Home: Salem Age: 33 Sign: Aquarius Occupation: Doctor's assistant for an optometrist in Salem Nominated by: Her friend Beth Brochu. According to Beth, "Mary is the warmest, kindest, most HYSTERICAL person someone could ever know. She never meets a stranger, embraces people from all walks of life and loves animals and children. She is loyal and faithful, puts others' needs before her own and can quote lines from any movie -- even ones she hasn't seen!" About Mary: There's no doubt about it, Mary's friendly. In fact, she has a talent for making other people feel comfortable. Like most genuine and joy-loving people, Mary loves laughing; she's so prone to bouts of laughter, she sometimes cracks herself up. Fun, enthusiastic and "Salem to the bone," her birthday celebrations are on par with national holidays, and although she doesn't have any human children, she does have a furry 7-year-old daughter named Grace who bears a striking resemblance to Old Yeller. Mary adopted Grace from Salem's animal shelter when she was spotlighted as the pet of the week.
General interests: Movies (she likes all kinds -- except for horror movies -- and "Excalibur" is her favorite), baseball (her favorite team is -- and she knows she could get into trouble for this -- the Yankees), meeting people from different cultures (she used to teach English as a second language) and the History Channel ("the greatest channel on cable TV," she said). Where you're most likely to find her: She doesn't go to bars much anymore; it was fun while it lasted, but it's too smoky now. She's a Salem girl, and she usually sticks to Avalanche baseball games, window shopping on Main Street or nabbing an Orange Aid ("Salem in a cup," she says) from Brooks-Byrd Pharmacy. Mary's routine when she goes out: When she has free time, she likes to head to Logan's Roadhouse with her girlfriends for steak and a beer, followed by a movie at Valley View Grande 16. How long she's been single: She's never been married, and her last serious relationship was two years ago.
Pro of single life: She's allowed herself the time to be alone and figure out exactly who she is. Con of single life: While Mary's willing to go to a baseball game or a movie by herself, there are some things she doesn't want to do alone, like a wine festival or Festival in the Park. Whom she'd like to meet: First and foremost, a man who's funny; it doesn't matter so much what he looks like or what car he drives, as long as she can sit, talk and laugh with him. She'd like to meet a man she can discuss current events and politics with, even if she doesn't agree with him. The bad boy attitude doesn't sit well with Mary -- it's not important to be cool, it's important to be genuine. In the next five years, Mary knows: She'll be here; she's not going anywhere. When she was younger, she wanted to be the kind of person who could just take off and settle somewhere else, but she knows this is the place she wants to stay. How she rates Roanoke's single life on a scale of 1 to 5: 4 Why? There's a lot to do if you're willing to dig around. Best date: A crisp fall afternoon spent sipping on wine and listening to live bands. Worst date: Playing darts or listening to karaoke at a bar. How to approach Mary: It's been said she's the "single easiest person to talk to," so it shouldn't be too hard. Just make sure to be open and warm -- and show your teeth when you smile. |
