Home: Hollins University campus Age: 22 Sign: Scorpio Occupation: Student Education: She's in her senior year, working on a bachelor's in English with a concentration in creative writing and a minor in art history. Nominated by: Her mom, Donna Antonelli. Donna thinks Alyssa has a lot to offer, but she goes to an all-women school, which limits her chances of meeting single men. "Lyss should take every opportunity to meet new people," Donna said. About Alyssa: Although she's still in the process of figuring out who she is, Alyssa's been described as cynical, observant, insightful and a good listener. She's a vegetarian who loves all animals (with the possible exception of spiders) and stands 5 feet 1/4 inches tall ("the quarter makes all the difference," she said). As a result, she tends to go for shoes with big heels. Alyssa caught the travel bug when she lived in New Zealand for a year when she was 16. For her, living abroad was an attempt to do something that both terrified and tempted her.
General interests: Most of Alyssa's interests fall under the category of "artsy stuff": writing, reading, theater, film, black-and-white photography and music. As far as her artsy interests are concerned, she's into the genres of things, which probably stems from the fact that she likes history. For instance, she likes tunes that can be linked to a specific era, such as blues, jazz and old Italian crooners. If she's in the right mood, she'll listen to almost any kind of music, though she often prefers older stuff because she thinks it tends to say more pertinent things. She also likes the outdoors, but she doesn't consider herself particularly athletic. Where you're most likely to find her: She tries to avoid dance clubs, preferring low-key cafes and live bands to ostentatious pop music and crowds. Often she can be found in a booth at the Waffle House on Williamson Road or at Books-A-Million. Alyssa's routine when she goes out: It usually involves listening to music, trying on multiple outfits and smoking a "calm down cigarette." How long she's been single: It's been five months since her last serious relationship.
Pro of single life: She's a solitary person by nature, and it's nice not having to worry whether what she's doing is making someone happy or not. Con of single life: You miss out on inside jokes and physical affection. Whom she'd like to meet: A man with a good sense of humor who knows who he is and who's not afraid to fight for the good stuff. In the next five years, Alyssa wants: To be living somewhere where she can cohabit with her two cats, Toby and Chaplin, and working in either editing or publishing. How she rates Roanoke's single life on a scale of 1 to 5: 3.5 or 4 Why? It's difficult for her to comment on Roanoke's single life because she came of age here and it's a larger city than she's used to (she's from Quarryville, Pa.). In Alyssa's opinion, there are plenty of avenues of entertainment and places to meet single people, but "it could be a city full of bars and opportunity but if you're not willing to put yourself out there, you're not going to meet anybody." Best date in Roanoke: She hasn't been on a lot of really good dates, but she thinks the most important part of a date is getting to know the other person, not where you go. Worst date in Roanoke: Mini-golf or bowling — it's a tie. How to approach Alyssa: You can't be too shy because she's never one to initiate, although that's not to say she's a fan of the pushy or aggressive approach. Never ask her to dance; you won't catch her dancing in public unless she's had one too many Blue Motorcycles. |
