Home: Rocky Mount Age: 49 Sign: Capricorn Occupation: Assistant manager at Wal-Mart Education: Management and accounting associate's degree from Virginia Western Community College Nominated by: Craig Strautin. Craig likes to give Rodney a push every now and again. He's known Rodney since their Cave Spring High School days and they graduated in '74 ("ouch!," he says). About Rodney: A veteran Roanoker, Rodney has been around town so long he can remember when Virginia 419 was just being built and Penn Forest was nothing but forest and woods. Friendly and talkative, Rodney enjoys getting together with other people and chatting about this and that. He's an active learner and enjoys mind-engaging discussions, especially when they concern the subject of history.
General interests: Live music, piddling around the house, do-it-yourself endeavors, landscaping, traveling, his Mazda Miata convertible and mystery novels (Michael Connelly, Jan Burke and Patricia Cornwell are all in his top five list). Where you're most likely to find him: You can catch him at Corned Beef and Co. every once in awhile, but he thinks outdoor activities are more appropriate ways to meet and mingle. He usually tries to make an appearance at the Thursday Party in the Park at Elmwood Park, First Fridays at Five and Salem After Five, and he looks forward to the Taste of the Blue Ridge Jazz and Blues Festival each year. Rodney's routine when he goes out: He tries to stay away from any sort of routine; he wakes up each morning without the slightest idea of what he's going to do. How long he's been single: 3 months Pro of single life: You can do what you please when you please. Con of single life: You don't have a steady partner to plan and look for things to do with; it's nice to have someone you can discuss things like music and history with.
Whom he'd like to meet: A fairly intelligent woman who's close to his age and doesn't mind getting her hair messed up. In the next five years, Rodney would like to: Get his pilot's license and see if he's any good at golf. Rodney was impressed with Bush senior's decision to jump out of an airplane, and he wouldn't mind giving the whole skydiving thing a shot as well. How he rates Roanoke's single life on a scale of 1 to 5: 4 Why? You can stay as busy as you want, and Rodney thinks Roanoke's got a lot more than people give it credit for. If you're bored, just drive down the parkway or take a trip over to Eagle Rock and take in the gorgeous scenery. Best date: Sitting down and taking in a nice dinner at Green Dolphin Grille, Tavern on the Market or any place on the Roanoke City Market. Afterwards, maybe take in a show at Jefferson Center or Mill Mountain Theatre. Worst date: He reckons he's never had a bad date. How to approach Rodney: He works in one of the biggest chains in the U.S., and he sees thousands of different faces each week. He's used to being in the public eye and he's not shy; all you have to do is say "hey." |
