Inside Out

Home: Blacksburg

Age: 45

Sign: Cancer

Occupation: Russian history professor

Education: A bachelor's degree in Russian studies from University of California Santa Cruz, a master's in Russian studies from Georgetown University and a Ph.D. in history from Indiana University.

Nominated by: Su Clauson-Wicker and Susan Kwilecki. Kwilecki says Suzanne's "blindness is merely physical, for she sees deeply into life and acts with moral integrity. In a world of superficialities, Suzanne is the real thing."

About Suzanne: Born legally blind in Germany, Suzanne's the daughter of an army officer and she's lived all over. Opinionated and brave, Suzanne's love of travel has never left her. A spiritual person, Suzanne's a member of the Baha'i community, and she believes strongly in her ability to affect the world around her in positive ways. She's the kind of person that makes connections with people; she's got a flat rate phone fee and she's good at staying in touch.

General interests: Singing and playing guitar, mystery novels and movies with solid plots ("The Terminal" and "Finding Neverland" are among her recent favorites). As for sports, she's not a huge Hokie fan, but she enjoys the occasional baseball game, swimming and English style horseback riding.

Where you're most likely to find her: The Ice Cream Crank, a Baha'i gathering or local restaurants, including India Garden, Mike's Grill, Cinco de Mayo and BT's.

Suzanne's routine when she goes out: Orchestrating rides makes any sort of consistent schedule difficult; however, regardless of where she goes, her seeing eye dog Nikita's usually in tow.

How long she's been single: 4 years

Pro of single life: You can do whatever you want with your time; compromise with another person isn't a daily struggle.

Con of single life: Coming home to an empty house can be hard. However, Suzanne doesn't think finding someone is the way to happiness -- having someone to spend your time with is nice, but not mandatory.

Whom she'd like to meet: She's always on the look-out for other musicians interested in collaboration, but romantically she's seeking a professional man who doesn't mind dogs and who likes to hold hands and meet new people.

In the next five years, Suzanne expects to: Either, A, get tenure or meet the greatest guy ever and stay in the area or B, not receive tenure or meet anyone special and probably relocate to Indiana.

How she rates Blacksburg's single life on a scale of 1 to 5: 1 or 2

Why? Transportation's tough for Suzanne because public transit in the area's not top notch. She doesn't drink or care for loud music, and consequently she feels a bit alienated from the social scene. In her opinion, most Blacksburg residents can be split into two major categories: college students and families.

Best date: Dinner someplace that's quiet enough to hold a conversation, ice cream at the Ice Cream Crank, followed by a walk on Huckleberry Trail.

Worst date: Going anyplace hot or noisy with a man who doesn't tell you he's married. If there's a wedding ring involved, disaster will inevitably ensue.

How to approach Suzanne: With sincere openness -- an overblown, salesman-like approach doesn't appeal to Suzanne.
