Home: Salem

Age: 39 Sign: Pisces

Occupation: Manager and former owner of Fab Shop, a welding store in Salem

School: A degree in welding from Virginia Western Community College

Nominated by: Friend "Mo" Lazenby wants to hook him up on a date. Mo says John's a great guy and he's been single too long.

About JJ: He's both outgoing and easy to get along with, and those close to JJ claim he'd "talk to a fence post if he stood there long enough." JJ loves all kinds of get-togethers. He hosts two big parties a year at his house (a Halloween party with costumes and a summer cookout with horseshoes). He's also the creator and director of the annual Fab 5K race in Green Hill Park (held this year on Aug. 20).

General interests: Sporting events (particularly Roanoke College men's and women's basketball) and if it involves the outdoors, he's probably interested. Whether he's running, cycling, hiking or vying for a spot in the shade at motocross, JJ's always up for some sunshine and fresh air.

Where you're most likely to find him: On his bike or hiking along Pandapas Pond in Blacksburg, Carvins Cove or the trails at Dragon's Tooth or McAfee Knob. He usually makes it out twice a month to First Fridays at Five or Salem After Five.

JJ's routine when he goes out: He's plan-oriented at work, but spontaneous once he's off the clock.

How long he's been single: 14 months

Pro of single life: When the weekend comes, you set your own schedule.

Con of single life: You don't have someone to spend your weekends with (it's a contradiction, but true nonetheless).

Whom he'd like to meet: An outgoing, fun, outdoorsy, nonsmoking gal with good morals and strong values.

In the next five years, JJ hopes: To have met someone he can battle through life with - he enjoyed marriage and he'd like to meet a lifelong partner.

How he rates Roanoke's single life on a scale of 1 to 5: 4

Why? JJ's not a bar person and after 20 years of marriage, Roanoke's single life is still new to him (yet he still thinks the Star City's got plenty to offer). If you think Roanoke's single life is a joke, JJ says, "Go to Martinsville."

Best date: A nice steak or seafood dinner at Flat Rock Grille. All that's required is good conversation - it doesn't have to be anything elaborate or overly romantic.

Worst date: Any date that involves a smoky bar or a shy person who has a hard time carrying on a conversation.

How to approach JJ: Recently divorced, JJ's not sure if he'd pick up on subtle signals, so bluntness is appreciated.
