Inside Out

Fred Hutchins
Josh Meltzer | The Roanoke
Times

Home: Botetourt County

Age: 23

Sign: Libra

Occupation: Legislative assistant for state Del. Onzlee Ware, D-Roanoke

School: A bachelor's in political science from Roanoke College

Nominated by: A friend who described Fred as "handsome and very nice with a quick wit." With a brand new big house in Botetourt and new Ford F-250 pickup, Fred "would be a great catch for some lucky lady," he said.

About Fred: A skeet-shooting, easy-going homebody, Fred describes his sense of humor as dry and sarcastic. He's hard to find during campaign season, but if you do catch up with him, you'll find that he's both outgoing and considerate.

General interests: NASCAR takes precedence over most things in Fred's life. "Remember, I'm from Botetourt," he said before expounding on the merits of Mark Martin and anyone associated with Ford's team.

Where you're most likely to find him: He shows up at Mango's Bar and Grill at Smith Mountain Lake when the band the Worx is playing (next gig is Aug. 5 and 6). He heads to Corned Beef & Co. about once a month for Texas Hold 'em poker - although he's got his own little slice of Las Vegas in his dining room in the form of an 8-foot poker table and 12 chairs. Most of the time, however, Fred prefers peace and quiet - hanging on his buddy Jacob's farm or just kicking back and watching a movie.

Fred's routine when he goes out: He usually triple checks all of the locks on his windows and doors (if you're confused, please see Fred's idiosyncrasy disclaimer below).

How long he's been single: 2 years

Pro of single life: You can hang out with "the guys" without a fight.

Con of single life: You don't have someone you can share everything with, including the thoughts and feelings you only feel comfortable revealing to that special someone.

Whom he'd like to meet: A woman tolerant of his many idiosyncrasies, such as lining up all of the glasses in his cabinet so that their logos are in alignment. She should also probably have a similar affection for cleanliness and order, and even if she doesn't particularly like politics, she should at least be somewhat up to date on current events.

How he rates Roanoke's single life on a scale of 1 to 5: 3

Why? "Roanoke is not a big city, but we have some big city attributes: beautiful natural surroundings, cultural attractions and a fairly eventful nightlife." Fred says people complain too much about Roanoke, downplaying many of its impressive developments in the last 15 years.

Best date: Cooking steak and potatoes on his back porch, and if all goes well, carpooling to Corned Beef for a night out.

Worst date: Eating in a smoky, crowded place. Also, Fred generally has a self-imposed two drink limit for himself, so a night of heavy drinking is a no-go.

How to approach Fred: Come up and say hello. Fred would talk to anybody - a brick wall if he had to. He's always looking for an audience.
