Home: Roanoke County

Age: 41

Sign: Gemini

Occupation: Attorney for Kalbaugh, Pfund and Messersmith

School: A bachelor's in American government from the University of Virginia and a law degree from Capital University Law and Graduate Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Nominated by: Female co-workers. They can't figure out why such a nice, professional guy hasn't found that special lady yet.

About Joseph: He spent six years on Capitol Hill, and sometimes he thinks he gets a bad rap for being a lawyer. Contrary to many popular lawyer stereotypes, Joseph is poised, personable and versatile. He supports the community in any way he can, serving on the board for the YMCA and the Big Brothers and Big Sisters group in the New River Valley, and as an active member of Roanoke's NAACP chapter.

General interests: Music (his taste is eclectic, from John Coltrane to the White Stripes to Papa Roach to pop chart champions Usher and Mariah Carey), spending time with his family and hiking on the Blue Ridge trails.

Where you're most likely to find him: After church on Sunday, he likes to spend a low-key afternoon in Barnes & Noble. Otherwise, you're likely to find him working out or watching the latest independent film at the Grandin Theatre.

Joseph's routine when he goes out: If he's not out of town for a personal trip or work-related business, he usually meets with friends for drinks at Dolce, 419 West, Metro or Applebee's at Valley View Mall.

How long he's been single: 3 years

Pro of single life: He's an only child and he's used to having things his way. Plus, he's a TV remote control freak (it's so bad that he even tries to take control of the remote at other people's houses).

Con of single life: When you find someone who you can create a mutually caring and supportive space with, you've pretty much struck gold.

Whom he'd like to meet: A woman who's self-confident, knows what she wants in life and knows how to enjoy herself.

How he rates Roanoke's single life on a scale of 1 to 5: 2 1/2

Why? Roanoke's the kind of place where people go out on Fridays and Saturdays, but not the weeknights. There's a lack of young professionals, but that's also coupled with a low cost of living and a community that's gradually expanding to include more culturally diverse venues.

Best date: A drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, dinner at the Peaks of Otter and then hearing a local band somewhere downtown.

Worst date: The traditional date "set-up" is usually full of stilted conversation and uncomfortable silences. Your friends usually have a good sense of who you are, and they have your best interests at heart. But, more often than not, when they try to orchestrate your personal life, it just doesn't work.

How to approach Joseph: With a smile and an interesting perspective on life.Want to talk to Joseph?
