Out & About: Dumpstaphunk

Talk about your wide-ranging triple-bills. The New Orleans groovemeisters of Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk hit Growler's on Friday, with blues-and-soul rocker Jamie McLean Band and Roanoke electro-jammers Funk Punch.

Dumpstaphunk, which has played electrifying sets at FloydFest and at Jefferson Center's rehearsal hall, comes back to Southwest Virginia with a recent album, "Everybody Want Some," and a spanking new drummer with a Roanoke Valley connection, Nikki Glaspie.

The band released the deeply funky "Everybody Want Some" in late 2010, when Raymond "Gas Man" Weber was still the drummer. After a tumultuous parting that included some Facebook drama, Neville's band called on Glaspie, formerly Beyonce's touring drummer. Glaspie's father, Enos Glaspie, is pastor at House of Agape Fellowship in Salem. Hear Glaspie performing in 2009 with Roanoke Valley-based bassist Bernard Hairston at blogs.roanoke.com/cutnscratch. She is brilliant.

Jamie McLean Band, which stops in the valley with some regularity, is on tour with Dumpstaphunk, including stops in Washington, Richmond and Virginia Beach. McLean, an outstanding guitarist and singer, was formerly a member of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. He and Neville performed together at Bonnaroo last year as part of a "New Orleans All-Stars" set.
