TONIGHT
Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad
With Lazy Man Dub Band
Get a night of stanky reggae grooves from two good acts. Giant Panda, from Rochester, N.Y., has rocked crowds at FloydFest and Blue Mountain, and a check of recent live recordings at the band's MySpace.com page shows that the Panda is still equipped for the job, with rock-solid rhythm work and sweet Hammond organ-style work. Lazy Man, from Roanoke, features "Drummie" Wayne Short on drums, natch, and bassist Chris McCorkle, both of whom once played in Shayar and Krooshal Force. Hear a podcast with drummer Chris O'Brian on this page at roanoke.com/entertainment or blogs.roanoke.com/cutnscratch.
Details: 9 p.m. Martin's Downtown Bar & Grill, Roanoke. $10. 21 and older. 985-6278, martinsdowntown.com, giantpandadub.com, myspace.com/lazymandubband.
FRIDAY
Zoo Do
Featuring Megan McCormick, with Monkey Fuzz
McCormick, who studied in the bluegrass music program at East Tennessee State University, has since gone a bit more pop with her music writing. In fact, a listen to tracks from her upcoming album "Honest Words" shows some Americana-pop-rock-leaning music with plenty of energy and fine musicianship. She also has some pretty doggone interesting hair. Monkey Fuzz has a band name apropos for a zoo fundraising function. Go to this story at roanoke.com/entertainment or to blogs.roanoke.com/cutnscratch for a podcast with McCormick.
Details: 6:30 p.m. Mill Mountain Zoo, Roanoke. $40. 343-3241, mmzoo.org, myspace.com/meganmccormicksmusic, monkeyfuzz.net.
WEDNESDAY
Adler's Appetite
Folks these days might know Steven Adler better from his stints on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" and "Sober House," but before the monkey clambered onto his back, he was the drummer for Guns N' Roses. Nowadays, he's on the road with Adler's Appetite (more than a nod to GNR's massive hit, "Appetite for Destruction"), which features a pack of sidemen from other Los Angeles hair-metal-heyday bands such as Quiet Riot, Faster Pussycat and Enuff Z'Nuff (namely bassist Chip Z'Nuff). Could be totally rad, or a train wreck. Either way, it sounds interesting.

If you were a punk, metal, alternative or ska freak during your youth in the 1980s and '90s, hit this show. Musicians and bands who were right in the middle of the scene in those days are gathering at Fork in the City to crank some tunes and look at photos of shows from the old days. Plenty of favorites from that era will be around, in full or in part, to make some music. Representing the (semi-)new school will be Jackal Tickets, a modern-day ska-punk band featuring members of such acts as Flip Flop and Fire at Will.
