Out & About: Coyote Run

Courtesy Coyote Run

Williamsburg band Coyote Run started as your average, everyday, Celtic folk act. Along the way, it infused rock, funk, jazz and flamenco -- juicing itself up.

Listeners still get plenty of the Gaelic instrumental standbys -- bagpipe, whistle, accordion -- but didgeridoo and djembe drums wind up sharing musical space.

Drummer Catherine Hauke joined Coyote Run about 2004, providing it with a fat backbeat and percussive nuance. The music underpins story-songs from bandleader David Doersch, a former theater professor with a jones for poetry and myth.

The band comes to Kirk Avenue Music Hall on Thursday night.

Coyote Run's song "Fool" is a good example of the band's approach. A Larry Johnson-style bass line meets up with a hot bagpipe melody -- the traditional "Red Haired Boy" -- and lyrics about a wild wanderer.

Go to this story at roanoke.com/entertainment or to blogs.roanoke.com/cutnscratch to hear a podcast with Doersch. We'll stream "Fool" and "Tam Lin."
