While you're lying around on Sunday evening, dreading the work week to come, a pack of outstanding jazz cats is blowing in downtown Roanoke.

Guitarist Greg Ayers has gathered a smoking rhythm section -- Bernard Hairston on bass and Carlos Aranguren on drums -- to play a mixture of standards and groove-based jazz. One song might be a swinging take on Charlie Parker's "Billie's Bounce," followed by a hip-hop version of John Coltrane's "Mr. P.C."

"We try to mix it up and make it more accessible for a wider variety of people," Ayers said.

Lately, keyboardist Mike Randolph has been sitting in with the band. Randolph plays with Hairston on gigs at Red Clay Restaurant.
