Cadillac Sky

FRIDAY

Cadillac Sky

This band built a lot of buzz at this year's MerleFest, and for good reason. Songs such as "Weary Angel" show the band is willing to apply its traditional roots to some Eastern-sounding tunes, without sounding like it's trying too hard to be hip. And for the goof factor, check out its version of "Video Killed the Radio Star."

Details: 8 p.m. Friday. Kirk Avenue Music Hall, Roanoke. $20. myspace.com/kirkavenuemusic, cadillacsky.net.

SATURDAY

Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band

With Stephanie Rooker

It's a big booty shaking July 4 at Nesselrod on the New. The Asheville group has a devoted tribe that loves to get down. Opening act Rooker, from Brooklyn, N.Y., by way of Radford, will be playing this show as a duo, with guitarist Ben Tyree.

Details: 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Nesselrod on the New, Radford. $20 garden; $15 lawn. 745-6643, sunkengardensundays.com, bootyband.com, stephanierooker.com.

TODAY

Scott Perry & Front Porch Swing

Scott Perry (guitars, ukulele) and Tom Ohmsen (mandolin) lead the way with many swing tunes, natch, but also a pretty funky take on Robert Johnson's "Walking Blues."

Details: 9 p.m. Thursday. Blue 5 Restaurant, Roanoke. Free. 904-5338, blue5restaurant.com, ohpapa.com.

FRIDAY

Sol Creech Band

Not so long ago, Sol Creech, George Penn and Jake Dempsey prowled the valleys, laying down their blue rasta funk. It's been awhile. Welcome them back and hear cool originals such as "Cloud 99" and reworked covers, such as a deep reggae version of Robert Johnson's "Hellhound on My Trail."

Details: 10 p.m. Friday. Martin's Downtown Bar & Grill, Roanoke. Free. 985-6278, martinsdowntown.com, reverbnation.com/solroots.

Phil Vassar

Details: 8:30 p.m. Friday. Martinsville Speedway, Martinsville. Free. martinsvillespeedway.com, philvassar.com.

Solrevolt

Don't get stupid in the bar when this band is playing. Sol Revolt has a lineup full of Roanoke police officers, and has just added a prosecutor -- harmonica-playing Botetourt County Commonwealth's Attorney Joel Branscom. Blue 5 could double as night court for this gig.

Details: 9 p.m. Friday. Blue 5 Restaurant, Roanoke. Free. 904-5338, blue5restaurant.com, myspace.com/solrevoltband.

Electric Chameleon

One of Roanoke's most popular bands has earned it, with a diversity of rock and pop songs featuring interesting chord changes, tight grooves and good vocals.

Funk Punch

This band hasn't been around long, but it's already proving to be a workhorse -- not just as a live act, but as a group of songwriters.

With Shinedown, Chevelle, Halestorm

They're calling it the "Stimulate This!" tour. And at roughly $10 a band (before service charges anyway), it sounds like a good deal for a night of hard rock. Catch Roanoke rockers Madrone at the 5:30 p.m. pre-show party.
