Oxford American's 2007 music issue features Thelonius Monk on the cover. Inside, you can find the Charlottesville-based Hackensaw Boys, with their old-time throwdown, "Look Out Dog, Slow Down Train," in the issue's CD mix. But these boys are no museum piece. They're wild.

Bill Kirchen & the Hammer of the Honky Tonk Gods
Here is a master of the Telecaster, showing you why Leo Fender produced these guitars in the first place. He can twang it up with the best of them, and has -- Kirchen wrote the riff to Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen's "Hot Rod Lincoln." That's smoking hot.

In vino, veritas, they say. Same axiom can apply to music. Down a few glasses at the FloydFest site and check out some cool tunes. The Subdudes, from Fort Collins, Colo., and New Orleans, were Americana before there was even a term for it. Club Boheme will swing you, old style. Blue Mule and Bebop Hoedown are both from the Roanoke Valley, and both mix their bluegrass with other musical styles.
