Blacksburg’s first Summer Solstice Festival on June 21 boasted everything from a dog parade to a beer garden, but one of the foodie hits was definitely the Clash of the Church Ladies Contest.

The Clash of the Church Ladies Contest had three categories: Best Use of a Boxed Cake Mix, Best Food Landscape and Best Fruit Monster. Groups and individuals from all over Blacksburg competed for the grand prize, a $1,000 purse given to the winner’s charity of choice, donated by Bollo’s and Gillie’s restaurants.

Sharkey’s and Boudreaux’s donated the first-place prize for each individual category, a $100 purse donated to a nonprofit of the winner’s choice. Jason Ryan won with this island and banana boat landscape and Jody Daniels won with her chocolate cake in the Best Use of a Boxed Cake Mix category.
