SPOTLIGHT: Art by Night

What would be the best way to kick off Inside Out's art column? Well, by telling you where to find it, of course. ‘It’ being original artwork by talented local artists. So that’s exactly what you’ll find in the next few issues.

Starting this week and leading up to Nov. 4, Inside Out will feature some stops on the Art by Night gallery tour. Coincidentally, Nov. 4 also happens to be the date of the next Art by Night.

What's Art by Night? Scheduled the first Thursday of each month, it’s a chance to eat, drink, be merry and appreciate some fine art in downtown Roanoke.

Who's on the tour: Signature 9 Gallery, Studios on the Square, Gallery 108, Market Square Gallery, the gallery at Jefferson Center and the Art Museum of Western Virginia.

The coolest part: A limo picks you up and chauffeurs you to each of the galleries. Not too shabby.

First stop: Signature 9 Gallery

Location: 1309 Third St.

Insider tip: Though it’s a little off the beaten path, don't fret: Signature 9 has its own parking lot! So feel free to park your car, mingle with the artists and then let the limo take you to the other galleries.

In a nutshell: Signature 9 is the newest of the galleries. It's only been open since May, but it has plenty of original work in a variety of media.

Gallery members: Sandi D’Alessandro, Gari Stephenson, Vera Dickerson, Nancy Stark, Tracy Budd, Karen Newell Blaesing, Gerrie Brown, Betty Calabria, Pat Cook, Jane Iten, Diane Patton, Barry Wolfe

Check this out: These ladies and gentlemen have so much gorgeous work that even the bathroom doubles as a display room.

Don't miss: Their signature piece above the staircase. It’s a composite featuring a square designed by each of the 12 members.

Regular hours: Noon-6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and by appointment.

Art by Night hours: 5-8ish

Call: 342-0703

Recap: Food, drink, great art, nice people, parking lot, LIMO!
