Fanning edges Harrison

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Virginia Tech freshman Jessica Fanning ran the 5-kilometer course in 18:06.10 to win the Lou Onesty Invitational and pace the Hokies to a second-place finish out of 12 teams competing Saturday. Virginia won the women's team competition.

Fanning edged second-place finisher Emily Harrison of UVa by 5 seconds. Tech's Jessica Morris finished fifth at 18:37.60 and Natalie Sherbak was sixth at 18:39.60. Senior Michael Lawson paced the Hokies men in 22nd at 26:06.40 as Tech finished fourth. UVa finished third.

Washington and Lee men

2nd in New York

NEW YORK - Nathan Johnson finished fourth of 242 runners in 27:15 as the Washington and Lee men finished second of 28 teams, while the Generals women finished fifth of 22 teams at the New York University Invitational.

Lindsay Erickson finished fifth of the 240 women in a time of 20:04.

Hollins takes 12th

RALEIGH, N.C. - Hollins' Amanda Miller finished in 59th place in 23:06 and Hollins took 10th place in the Adidas Raleigh Invitational featuring 15 NCAA Division I, II and III teams.

Hollins finished ahead of Division II schools Mt. Olive College and St. Augustine.

W&L ties Bridgewater

LEXINGTON - Court Nexson scored as Washington and Lee tied Bridgewater 1-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Nexson scored in the 32nd minute to put W&L (1-2-1, 0-0-1) up, but the Eagles (1-2-2, 0-0-1) knotted the score on a goal from Matt Brock.

Michael Stanton had four saves in 110 minutes in goal for the Generals.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Maroons rout EMU

Four different Roanoke players scored as the host Maroons opened their ODAC schedule with a 4-0 rout of Eastern Mennonite (2-4, 1-1).

Jill Hoffmeister, Emily Ocheltree, Erica Hammarlund and Tiffany Gruschow scored for the Maroons (5-1, 1-0), who outshot EMU 21-7.

Randolph-Macon 0

LEXINGTON - Gina Von Sternberg scored in the 32nd minute and Emily Barker made it stand up as the Generals remained unbeaten with an ODAC victory over the Yellow Jackets (3-1-0, 0-1-0).

Barker made three saves to earn her third shutout in four games this season.

Bruschi's hat trick

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Kristen Bruschi scored three first-half goals to propel Muhlenberg (4-2) to a 5-2 nonconference victory over Washington and Lee.

S.B. Northen scored both goals for the Generals (0-2).

Borel 8th in meet

MONTE-CARLO, Monaco - Cleopatra Borel, the volunteer throws coach at Virginia Tech, recorded a throw of 16.24 meters to finish eighth in the women's shot put event at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Finals.

Borel, the eighth-ranked shot put woman in the world, took 10th at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
