The biggest whiners drove up the cost of fuel

The biggest whiners drove up the cost of fuel

There has been much criticism in the media about high gas prices and energy costs. Most follow the template of F.M. Davenport's letter ("Economic disaster floats some boats," May 9). Its vitriol always bashes Bush, Cheney, Rice, et al., and, of course, the big energy companies.

In truth, the culprits of the high prices are those who complain the most: the Democrats, environmentalists and liberal elitists who have blocked every attempt by Republicans to make our country less dependent on foreign oil.

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York is a perfect example of the posturing and hypocrisy with his recent statement that drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is not a solution, since it would take eight to 10 years to get oil from that field. Yet back in the '90s, he supported President Clinton's decision not to allow drilling there.

It's been decades since an oil refinery has been built in this country. France gets most of its energy from nuclear plants, but we have built none. President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and Cuba make plans to drill in the Gulf of Mexico, but we do nothing. Quit bellyaching. You reap what you sow, so get used to higher energy prices.

Biking to work has advantages

Thanks to The Roanoke Times for providing excellent coverage of Bike Month and for exposing our community to the growing number of people who ride their bikes to work.

I have been riding mine to Glen Cove Elementary since October. Not only have I saved money on gas and lost a few pounds, but I have also been able to provide my students an example of what I am always reminding them. We must take care of the world around us, locally, nationally and globally.

I should also thank the many mothers and grandmothers who have provided me with advice and flashing lights for my bike. I look like a rolling Christmas tree, but I am getting to work safely. Mostly, I thank my students who cheer me on when I pass their houses on the way to school.

Earth's bounty is evidence of creation

Regarding Michael Scott's May 2 commentary "Intelligent design lacks testable theories":

All one has to do is realize the accumulative amount of provisions that have been provided for the benefit mostly of mankind.

The Earth reveals many proofs why intelligent design cannot be denied. The Earth produces fruits, vegetables, cattle for meat, seeds to grow food, trees to offer shelter, shade and wood for building houses, furniture, etc.

Earth also provides water for the thirst of humans and animals. The atmosphere furnishes rain for growth for a variety of things. The sun gives us warmth and light. At night, the moon and stars give a spectacular view of the heavens as they circle the sun in a calculated journey.

Earth also provides gold, silver and natural gas, and knowledge is given for man to benefit from these items. The big bang theory, evolution or any other theory are the ones that have no testable or logical credibility. Intelligent design is all that is left, and the intelligent designer is God.

For further proof, read your Bible, which gives extended information for all who desire to know the truth about all creation.

Government has insatiable needs

It was quite a coincidence that I was reading about Mark Warner's speech in The Roanoke Times when I received my tax bill for my two vehicles ("A play to center field," May 6 Virginia section).

There was a time when I was very happy to contribute my fair share of money to the state of Virginia. However, that has changed from 2001 until now. The budget for Virginia has increased, depending on who you talk to, between 50 percent and 75 percent during the Warner/Kaine administrations.

As of now, the $1.4 billion tax increase coordinated by then-Gov. Warner plus the surplus has long been consumed by Gov. Tim Kaine, and Virginia is one of several states having to float bonds to make ends meet.

The "No Car Tax" coordinated by then-Gov. Jim Gilmore would not have changed what has happened. It would have been spent on special-interest needs. Now it goes to everyone who owns a car, which includes myself.

There is never enough money for the government.
