La Chapelle de la Madeleine
The Chapel whose origin dates back to the 12th Century is the only remaining building of a much bigger establishment known, in the ancient times, under the name of "La Madeleine Leper-Hospital". Leprosy devastated Europe during the Middle Ages and only disappeared at the end of the 17th Century.
It was listed as a historical monument in 1974, bought by the Town of Saint-Lo in 1988 and so safeguarded.
La Chapelle becomes
le Memorial de la Madeleine
Since Major Howie was killed a few yards from this Chapel, on July 17th 1944, the building was the right place to lodge the " Memorial ".
Inaugurated in 1995 before a group of American War Veterans, it is a place to pay a tribute to the Soldiers (29th and 35th Infantry Division) who fought for Saint-Lo.
You will find photographs of the fights and of the entrance of the first American soldiers in Saint-Lo as well as memory plates, paintings and flags given to the town by American Veterans or officials on their visit here (especially for D-Day anniversary).
Personal objects given by the veterans or their families are also displayed.
Maps drawn after historical testimonies and writings show the roads followed by the various divisions to Saint-Lo.
A group of photos also presents the inauguration of Major Howie's bust
(Jan. 1947, Staunton, Virginia).
