College drinking in Virginia

Sparked by the Amethyst Initiative to re-examine the legal drinking age, The Roanoke Times launched an occasional series in the spring called "Under 21" to take a look at how the issue of drinking is handled on college campuses round the region. As part of the series, we've been collecting and analyzing data on college alcohol policies and practices, how college presidents feel about the Amethyst Initiative, and, most recently, the rates of alcohol violations on 42 Virginia campuses. See what we've found on our Under 21 site, including the data section featuring interactive maps and graphics of all our data.

More than 1,000 black Roanokers found their final resting place in Springwood Burial Park, a private black cemetery in the Lincoln Terrace area of the city. After the cemetery closed in 1979, it fell into disrepair. But in the last year, Roanoker Bob Bird has been on a mission to reclaim the graveyard and document who lies in the hundreds of lost graves. So far, he's identified more than 325 of them. See who they are in our searchable Springwood Burial Park database.
