More than 325 burials documented
More than 1,000 people found their last resting place in Springwood Burial Park in Roanoke's Lincoln Terrace neighborhood between 1937 and 1979. Weeds have since overtaken the private graveyard for blacks, but Roanoker Robert Bird is leading a charge to recapture Springwood. Working with Rena Worthen of the Botetourt Genealogy club and her mother, Margarette Tynan, he has amassed data on more than 325 of Springwood's dead. Search here to see who is buried there. Click "details" to read the exact words on their gravemarkers.
