Which Zip Codes reported it most
When a 3.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Roanoke area at 4:08 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, hundreds of people began going online to the United States Geological Survey Website to report their experience. About 500 reports were in by the following Monday morning. The map below documents by Zip Code where the reports came from, along with the epicenter. The darker the area, the more reports from that Zip Code. Click on the area to see the Zip Code and the number of reports made from it.

Some notes on the data: Bear in mind that this data reflects reports made online, meaning only people with Internet access who were aware of the USGS Website are included here. Thousands more reportedly called 911. Self-selecting, Internet-based reporting can skew the data. For example, residents in lower income areas might be less likely to have Internet access in their homes. Also, more rural areas, like those lightly colored Zip Codes south of Roanoke, simply have fewer people to make reports.
