DataSphere Image Public safety charities: how much of your donation do they get?

Professional fundraisers take a hefty cut

The phone rings, and the caller wants to know if you’ll make a donation to the local Fraternal Order of Police chapter or your community rescue squad. You write a check, but only a portion of it reaches that organization. Many charities, including public safety-related ones, hire professional solicitors to raise money for them. Professional solicitors raised roughly $23 million on behalf of Virginia police, firefighter and rescue squad groups between January 2004 and December 2006, and the solicitors held onto $17 million, or almost three quarters of it. Search this database of contracts between these charities and solicitors to find out what percentage of donations have actually gone to the charities you want to help. The list covers campaigns for Virginia-based organizations, but some campaigns may be excluded because of incomplete or faulty data or because they could not be identified as public-safety related charities.
