  • How green is your city or county when it comes to recycling? Get an idea here based on the percentage of municipal solid waste your trash collection agency recycles. The rate is based on the percentage of municipal waste that gets recycled, but the reporting agency can also boost its rate by claiming credits for recycling of non-municipal waste and for waste reduction programs. Statewide for 2006, the recycling rate was 38.4 percent. About 3.7 million tons of waste was recycled in Virginia last year, according to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

  • Roanoke's large stock of housing built before 1978 means hundreds and hundreds of local homes have coats of lead-based paint. Although not all of the below cases are from lead-paint in homes, the dust particles from peeling paint around windows and on walls is the largest source of elevated blood lead levels for children under 6 in this area, according to the Virginia Department of Health.
