  • Virginia deer harvest per square mile
  • The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries doesn’t just count the deer killed and checked in the state each year. It also tabulates the rate of deer killed per square mile of suitable habitat in each locality. Suitable habitat excludes areas of dense development, bodies of water and other areas where deer don’t live. Few Virginia cities have legal deer hunting, but in recent years cities have reported deer harvests largely associated with government-approved hunts of nuisance deer. As a result, some of the highest rates of deer killed per square mile are actually in Virginia’s cities. The data here covers 1994 through 2006.
