About Botetourt County
Botetourt County
Botetourt's average elevation is 1,000 feet, with mountains such as Apple Orchard and Sugarloaf reaching to 4,000 feet above sea level.
Botetourt County
Botetourt got its name from the royal governor of Virginia, Norborne Berkeley, baron de Botetourt, in 1769. Even though the name is French, locals pronounce it "bot-a-tot." When Botetourt was formed, its western boundary was the Mississippi River.
Botetourt is home to roughly 32,000 residents. The county seat is Fincastle. Interestingly enough, William Clark (of Lewis and Clark fame) married a woman from Fincastle.
