Stepping Stones
Good Samaritan Hospice needs volunteers to help with a support group for children who have lost a parent or guardian. The group meets the second Thursday of each month from September through May.

Ride for Life
Vinton Moose Lodge is sponsoring a ride to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

English tutors
Refugee and Immigration Services is seeking volunteers to teach English survival skills to refugees from Iraq, Myanmar, Cuba and Bhutan. No experience is necessary.
When: Training is Sept. 12.

Literacy tutoring
Orientation for volunteers who want to tutor adults in basic literacy or English for Speakers of Other Languages.

Hospice volunteers
Good Samaritan Hospice will offer free training for family support volunteers who work with terminally ill patients and their families.
When: Registration deadline is Sept. 21. Training sessions start Sept. 29 and will be held Tuesday and Friday mornings through October.

Memory Ride
The Roanoke Police Department will host the seventh annual Memory Ride, with proceeds going to Roanoke Valley Project Lifesaver and the Greater Roanoke Valley Autism Action Group. The event will include a live auction.
When: Sept. 26; registration begins 9 a.m., first bike leaves 10 a.m.
Where: Roanoke Valley Harley-Davidson, 1925 Peters Creek Road
Cost: $20 per bike
