Food bank phone bank
Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank needs volunteers to make follow-up phone calls to law firms that have been invited to participate in a food drive. Calls can be made from the food bank or at a location of the volunteer's choice.

EventZone volunteers
EventZone needs volunteers for the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and Celtic Festival and for its Cabin Fever event.
When: March 14, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (parade); March 20, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Cabin Fever)

Volunteer English tutors
Refugee and Immigration Services is seeking volunteers to teach English to refugees. No experience is needed and scheduling is flexible, but volunteers are asked to commit to two sessions a week.
When: Training session will be held March 14, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hospice volunteer training
Good Samaritan Hospice will hold training sessions for new volunteers to work with terminally ill patients and their families.
When: Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6 to 9 p.m., starting March 17. Sessions run for four weeks. Application deadline is March 12.

Youth Conservation Corps
The state Department of Conservation and Recreation is taking applications for the 2009 Youth Conservation Corps. The program is open to high school students age 14 to 17. Participants will work on projects including trail construction and shoreline improvement. Work sessions are June 21 to July 11 and July 19 to Aug. 8 at Virginia state parks. Room, board and a $500 stipend are provided. Deadline for applications is April 11.
