Adoption orientation
Children's Home Society of Virginia is offering free orientation for people interested in learning about adoption.

Coat drive
The Warm Hearts & Warm Coats drive is collecting coats for needy Roanoke-area residents. Coats should be in good condition, with working fasteners and no rips or stains. Coats will be distributed by the Salvation Army.

Adult literacy tutors
Literacy Volunteers will host an orientation class for volunteers to tutor adults in basic literacy or English for Speakers of Other Languages. No teaching experience necessary.
Where: Downtown library, 706 S. Jefferson St., Roanoke.

Fresh Air Fund
Host a child from New York City this summer through the Fresh Air Fund's Friendly Town program. Each year, up to 5,000 children visit volunteer host families from Virginia to Maine for up to two weeks.

Poplar Forest volunteers
Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest will host an open house for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer at the site. All volunteers must attend four three-hour classes; training will take place in February and March.

Volunteer drivers
Bedford Ride, a nonprofit organization that provides free transportation to nonemergency medical appointments for elderly, disabled and low-income residents of Bedford and Bedford County, is seeking volunteer drivers. The organization supplies the vehicle, gas and insurance.

Tax preparation volunteers
Volunteers are needed to assist people with their income tax returns.

AARP Tax-Aide needs volunteer tax preparers and receptionists. Training is provided.
