The Altruist Club of Roanoke will present 17 high school seniors and their escorts in its 55th annual Debutante Ball on Dec. 29 in the ballroom of the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center.
The young ladies are sponsored by Roanoke Valley businesses, community organizations and individuals and have ladies-in-waiting.
A debutante queen will be crowned by the 2007 queen, Brittany Dillard, a Winston-Salem State University freshman, and the debs will vie for scholarships. Nine Jewels -- middle school-aged girls -- and 20 elementary school-aged Princes and Princesses also will participate in the cotillion. Taron Wright, son of Renee Carter, is Junior Grand Marshal for the cotillion.
Tickets for the 6 p.m. dinner affair are $40 and should be purchased by Saturday from a debutante or by calling 366-6176.
Proceeds will benefit the Alwyn Hamlar Saunders Memorial Scholarship Fund. Since the ball's beginning, the fund, named for a charter member of the Altruist Club, has provided money for more than $150,000 in scholarships and grants to 1,615 high school seniors.
