Eight Roanoke-area teachers were selected to receive special funding as part of U.S. Cellular's "Calling All Teachers" campaign, which is funding more than 2,000 classroom projects nationwide.

The teachers are from six schools and submitted project descriptions to be eligible for a share of the $1 million. The projects are listed below:

"We the Pod-People," a digital media project taught by Matthew Uselton at Patrick Henry High School.

"Once in a Lifetime Biotechnology Experience Part I," a lab-oriented science class taught by Mark Levy at Patrick Henry High School.

"Autism in Action: Learning Through Movement and Music," a music and art class for children with autism spectrum disorder taught by Loretta Shrewsbury at Garden City Elementary School.

"Look, it's Me!", a project for special education preschoolers that involves literacy and math projects featuring pictures of the students and "Is Everything That Has Four Legs a Dog?", a project that will expose the students to a variety of animals using nonfiction books taught by Kimberly Miller at Fallon Park Elementary School.

"Ease the Senses!", a promotion of sensory integration, balance, coordination, muscle strengthening and awareness of body in space for preschool students taught by Eunice Khetani at Highland Park Learning Center.

"Making it Count!", a project that will teach math words and concepts to student immigrants taught by Bonnie Frazier at William Fleming High School.

"Life Changes in Life Science!", a "mobile makeover" for a sixth-grade life science class learning in a mobile unit taught by Maggie Marsh at Thaxton Elementary School.

Several Roanoke City Public Schools students will be performing with conductor David Stewart Wiley and Roanoke Symphony Orchestra members Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Dumas Center for Artistic & Cultural Development.

The students have been working with the Friends of the Symphony for the past month and will perform on clarinet and violin. The program is free and open to the public.

Raleigh Court Elementary School and William Ruffner Middle School will celebrate the schools' histories on Sunday. Both schools will be closing at the end of the school year in a budget-cutting move.

Raleigh Court will remember the school's 49-year history and honor past and present staff members at a reception from 2 to 5 p.m. in the school's gym.

William Ruffner invites former students, principals, faculty, school board members and city council members to a display of memorabilia at the school from 3 to 5 p.m.
