Central Academy Middle School eighth-grader Nialah Wilson of Daleville is the second-place winner of the 2009 Imagine That! Engineering Innovation Essay Contest held by the National Academy of Engineering's EngineerGirl! Web site.
The national contest drew more than 400 entries. Contestants were asked to consider three specific images and discuss their potential uses in engineering.

Two Fallon Park Elementary School teachers recently received grants from donorschoose.org that will help them improve their classroom activities.
Jodi Novak will use her grant to purchase basic art supplies and Kimberly Miller will use the funds to buy nonfiction books.

The Noel C. Taylor Academy is hosting an art show and silent auction of student artwork from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Several Roanoke City Public School students will be performing with conductor David Stewart Wiley and Roanoke Symphony members May 31 at 4 p.m. at the Dumas Center for Artistic & Cultural Development.
The students have been working with the Friends of the Symphony for the past month and will perform on clarinet and violin. The program is free and open to the public.

Raleigh Court Elementary School and Ruffner Middle School will celebrate the schools' histories May 31. Both schools will be closing at the end of the school year in a budget-cutting move.
Raleigh Court will remember the school's 49-year history and honor past and present staff members at a reception from 2 to 5 p.m. in the school's gym.
William Ruffner invites former students, principals, faculty, school board members and city council members to a display of memorabilia at the school from 3 to 5 p.m.

Burlington Elementary School third-grader Skylour Stultz won second place in the Southeast Rural Community Assistance Project's annual "Water is Life" essay contest for her essay "What Water Means to Me."

Thirteen Cave Spring High School students recently received recognition for scoring extremely well on the 2009 National Spanish Examinations at various levels.
Kathryn Lawyszek earned a gold medal. Ashley Anderson, Sarah Houhoulis and Marion Whisnant earned silver medals. Kasia Luzynski and Hayley Steele earned bronze medals.
Genevieve Anderson, Andrew Conley, Rebecca Davis, Candice Furrow, Andre Miranda, Emily Smith and Tatum Tyler received honorable mentions.
