The Splattered Right Angles, the Cave Spring Middle School Destination Imagination team, recently placed second at the state competition after placing first at the Roanoke County competition earlier this school year.
The seven sixth-graders have been working since October to create a small structure designed to hold as much weight as possible and incorporate the structure into a skit.
The team will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., later this month to compete in the global finals.

Patrick Henry High School seniors Benjamin Mullet and Emily Thisdell have been named semifinalists in the Presidential Scholars Program.
Final selection of scholars will be made in May and take into account the students' biographies, community service and academic records.

Liberty High School junior Alexandra Kieley will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy's high school summer program.

W.E. Cundiff Elementary School kindergarten teacher Kathy Barber has been named the 2009 Golden Apple Award winner.
Each year, the award is given to Roanoke County Public Schools teachers who are nominated by students, parents, co-workers and administrators. This year, 86 teachers were nominated and 24 were named as semifinalists.
Other finalists were Glenvar Elementary School P.E. teacher Amy Crawford, Hidden Valley Middle School English teacher Lisa Weneta and Hidden Valley High School computer programming and Web design teacher Skip Larrington.
The winner of the 2009 Green Apple Award, recognition for a new teacher in Roanoke County, is Glenvar Elementary School third-grade teacher Erin Carroll.

Lucy Addison Middle School student David Prince is tied for first in the nation for his recent long jump score.
He jumped a distance of 20 feet, 5 inches at the Squires Invitational track and field competition.
David also placed fourth nationwide on the triple jump with a distance of 37 feet, 4 inches.

Liberty High School sophomore William Sperrazza recently won the American Legion's oratory contest.
His speech about the 16th Amendment and the right of the U.S. Congress to impose federal income tax won the Bedford competition and the district contest in Lynchburg.

The Hurt Park Elementary School Odyssey of the Mind team won third place in the recent state competition.

Several Liberty High School agriculture students placed in the March 31 Hub Federation Dairy Judging Contest in Huddleston.
Sarah Hess placed first overall, and Roy Nichols placed fourth.
Clint Croft, Darik Lagivne, Tim Kirtley and Sarah Hess were on the second place junior judging team.
Roy Nichols, Zach Townsend, Ricky Dooley and Nathan Tuttle were on the third place senior judging team.
Dustin Crouch, Ashley Delp, Codie Goff and Josh Overstreet were on the fourth place senior judging team.
