Family and Consumer Sciences students at William Byrd High School collected more than 1,300 juice boxes for the Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank.
The collection kicked off the annual juice drive for the food bank's Kids Cafe programs.

Three Roanoke City Public Schools Governor's School students earned high honors at the Virginia Junior Science and Humanities Symposium held recently at James Madison University.
Alex Harvey placed first in the environmental science category, Matthew Higgs placed first in microbiology and Rachel Strauss placed first in engineering/physics. All three students are from Patrick Henry High School.

Three Roanoke Technical Education Center students performed well at the recent state SkillsUSA conference.
Mariah McCain of William Fleming High School scored first in culinary arts.
Micah Denson, also of William Fleming, earned second place in welding.
Hayden Kowalchuck of Patrick Henry High School took third place in the Internet working category.

The deadline for applications for the 2009 Youth Leadership Forum is today.
High school students with disabilities selected as delegates for the conference will participate in a program that will address leadership development, career and higher education awareness, assistive technology, advocacy and teamwork. The forum is at Christopher Newport University from July 13 to 17. Scholarships will cover the entire cost for delegates to attend.

Family Service of Roanoke Valley is looking for volunteers to participate in Global Youth Service Day. Youth ages 12 to 25 will help from noon to 3 p.m. April 25.
The projects will benefit Wasena Park, River's Edge Sports Complex, the Mill Mountain Discovery Center and Zoo, Mill Mountain trails, Highland Park, the Rescue Mission and the Taubman Museum of Art.

It's honor roll time again. Please send in A and A/B honor rolls for the third nine weeks via e-mail to yourcommunity@roanoke.com by April 30.
Honor rolls should be submitted in Microsoft Word (or similar) documents -- not spreadsheets. Students should be listed by grade in "first name last name" format in alphabetical order by last name. Do not use middle initials or names unless there are two or more students with identical first and last names. Names should be in title case (not all capitalized letters). Please note the example below and e-mail or call 981-3269 with any questions or concerns.

7th grade A honor roll: Susie Alpha, Bobby Bravo, Tommy Charlie ... Elizabeth Zulu.
7th grade A/B honor roll: ... Johnny A. Jones, Johnny B. Jones.
