Franklin County High School's Air Force JROTC Drill Team competed in the first drill competition of the season hosted by the Bedford Science and Technology Center's Army JROTC. Of the five participating units, Franklin County placed first in four categories, second in three categories and third in one category.

Three Roanoke County school nutrition managers received state awards.

Kathy Stackpole of Bonsack Elementary School won the Louise Sublette Award, the highest award a nutrition manager can earn.

Kimberly E. Stevens of Hidden Valley High School won the President's Award for Excellence and the Physical and Nutrition Education Award.

Lynne Fobare of Masons Cove Elementary School won the State Marketing Award.

Tatum Tayler, a senior at Cave Spring High School, and Taylor Poindexter, a senior at Hidden Valley High School, won the 2009 DAR Good Citizen Award.

The Garden City Elementary School Math-A-Thon raised $1,172 for St. Jude's Research Hospital.

Three James Madison Middle School Odyssey of the Mind teams and one team from Hurt Park Elementary School placed in the regional competition and will advance to the state competition April 18.

West Salem Elementary School is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair for Children's Book Week through Thursday.

The Liberty High School forensics team competed at a regional competition March 14. Julius Fauntleroy, Emma Tibbs and Kenzie Vanderwerker made it to the final rounds of the competition.

Kenzie placed fourth overall in the storytelling category. She will advance to the state competition as an alternate.

The Patrick Henry High School orchestra recently competed in the most difficult level at the regional festival.

The ensemble received superior ratings -- the highest rating available.

Four Liberty High School Odyssey of the Mind teams placed at the regional tournament March 14.

The 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade teams each placed first in their respective divisions and will advance to the state competition.

A mixed team placed second in its division.

William Fleming High School student Ashley Smith earned three medals and finished first in the marketing management category at the recent DECA State Leadership Competition. She will advance to the 2009 International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, Calif.

Three teams from Liberty High School are competing today in the EconChallenge state championships in Richmond.

Firehouse Subs at Towers is sponsoring a party for Crystal Spring Elementary and Stonewall Jackson Middle schools for successful United Way campaigns.

Crystal Spring staff members averaged more than $70 per person, and Stonewall Jackson staff averaged more than $35 per person.

Twenty-two Roanoke County Public Schools students placed in the annual Western Virginia Regional Science and Engineering Fair held March 21 at Virginia Western Community College.

Each of the eight students who placed first in the High School Division will advance to the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair held Friday and Saturday at George Mason University. Each also received a renewable $1,500 scholarship to Roanoke College and a one-year tuition scholarship to Virginia Western Community College.

Female first-place winners also received a $5,000 renewable scholarship to Hollins University.

The Cave Spring High School Art Honor Society is holding a Spring Bling jewelry show of work by Snazee Lady Accessories on Tuesday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Glenvar Middle School teacher Sharon Hill has been named the 2008 Roanoke County Educator of the Year. Hill, who teaches English, has been teaching in Roanoke County Public Schools for 24 years.
