Greater Roanoke Home Educators is hosting a meeting for new home educators from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the HQ/419 Library in Roanoke County.
Getting started in home education, Virginia home education law and choosing curriculums will be discussed.

"How to Apply for Financial Aid and Find Money to Pay for College," a workshop for parents and students, will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the Williamson Road branch library in Roanoke.

Four students from William Byrd High School placed in the March 7 Blue Ridge Regional Technology Student Association competition.
They are all eligible to participate at the state competition in May.
Robert Jones, Ashton Witt and Taylor Hayes placed first, second and third, respectively, in the Imagine Technology category.
Logan Patterson placed second in the Technical Sketching and Design category.

The Liberty High School Forensics Team won third place at a tournament held Feb. 21. In addition, the following students placed in their respective categories and went on to compete in the regional tournament March 13:
Lauren Cahow, Julius Fauntleroy, Felicia Hall, Jennalea Ports, Emma Tibbs, Kenzie VanDerwerker and Phoebe Weber.

Two Roanoke Technical Education Center students recently placed at the state leadership conference for Health Occupations Students of America.
Megan Buschor earned first place for her national recognition project and Jaleesa Davis earned third place in the medical knowledge test.

Thirty-one Roanoke County students participated in the Virginia Western Community College Region Future Business Leaders of America competition.
The 18 students who placed first or second in individual categories will compete in the state competition in April.

The Liberty High School combined band and Bedford Middle School band each received a superior rating at the State District Band Festival.

Students from Fallon Park Elementary School in Roanoke collected more than 1,000 food items for a local food pantry in February.

Roanoke's Garden City Elementary School second grade teacher Kerry McGraw won a $700 Target field trip grant. She will take her students to Amazement Square in Lynchburg to learn about ancient China and Egypt.

Roanoke Valley Governor's School teacher Martha Gwen Sibert is the American Chemical Society Blue Ridge Section Chemistry Teacher of the Year.

A $29,930 grant recently awarded to the Roanoke Valley Governor's School from the Toshiba America Foundation will be used to purchase equipment that will allow students to analyze organic compounds.

Compass USA is searching for 15 volunteers to host Chinese high school students from July 16 to 30.
