Twelve William Fleming and Patrick Henry High School students earned first- or second-place honors in their respective categories at the District VII Skills USA competition, earning them eligibility to compete at the state competition in March.

Hannah Stewart of Liberty High School won third place overall at the Feb. 2 DECA District 5 Leadership Conference.
Six other Liberty students also took part in the competition.

Two local students were named to the High List, an academic honor roll at Episcopal High School, a boarding school in Alexandria.
Mary Elizabeth Frantz of Salem and Julia Parks Magee of Roanoke received a 90 or above in four or more academic courses for the second quarter of the 2008-09 school year.

Nine Liberty High School students took place in the Virginia All-District Band held in Bristol on Feb. 6 and 7.
Megan Poff, Daniel Burnette and Jessica Page-Mallory were designated first chair performers in the Symphonic Band.

Hidden Valley Middle School eighth-grader Sachith Gullapalli won his fourth straight Roanoke County Spelling Bee with the word "sullenness."
He will compete in the Roanoke Regional Spelling Bee and the winner of that competition will go on to the 82nd annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.
