Monterey Elementary School students celebrated 20 countries and 11 languages during Multicultural Day on Jan. 30. The students tried ethnic foods and experienced a flag parade, student performances and a musical performance from the African group Kusun.

Wasena Elementary School third-grade teacher Kimberly Cuardo received the most votes in the Sam's Club "favorite teacher" campaign. As her prize, she got a $100 gift card and the school received $1,000.

The Roanoke Williamson Road Lions Club is looking for talented vocalists and instrumentalists in grades 7 to 12. The club is sponsoring the Virginia Lions Bland Music Scholarship Competition at 2 p.m. Feb. 22 at Airlee Court Baptist Church in Roanoke.
Participants should register before Feb. 18 by calling 510-3006.
