Locher Grove, a 2008 James Madison Middle School graduate, received the 2007-08 Madison Award of Excellence. The award is given each year to an eighth-grader who shows character, excels academically and artistically, has a good attitude and acts as an example for what teachers hope to accomplish in working with middle school students.
In addition, seven former Madison students earned straight A's in every class during each nine weeks in all of their years at the school. For this accomplishment, Locher, Anne Burke Baldridge, Anna Paden Carson, Matthew Catron, Elizabeth Higgs, Wilson Kuhnel and Tessa Swanson were named to the James Madison Hall of Fame.
Because of a $2,500 grant from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation, Glenvar Elementary School will be purchasing an Activboard.
The Activboard is an interactive teaching tool that school officials hope will engage, motivate and inspire students.
The Food Lion Charitable Foundation gives financial support for organizations dedicated to improving communities where there is a Food Lion, with an emphasis on the support of primary and secondary education.
The Center for Cultural Interchange, headquartered in Chicago, is looking for families to host foreign exchange students for the 2008-09 school year. Students will come from one of 65 countries and the deadline to place them is Aug. 29.

The first V.O.Y.C.E. Youth Conference has been scheduled for Aug. 14 to 16 at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center.
The statewide youth conference is being presented by the City of Roanoke Youth Commission, the Youth Services Citizen Board and the Youth Services Division and is designed to provide an opportunity to improve active listening skills.
Attendees 13 to 18, adults and teachers will participate in workshops with topics focusing on leadership development, cultural competency and diversity, spoken word and the arts and more.
