ArchiveRaleigh Court Elementary School is holding a Scholastic "Reading Road Trip Book Fair" open to students, staff and the community. It is open from 2:45 to 6 p.m. until Friday with new books for preschool-age children through adults for prices as low as $2. Proceeds from the fair will be used to replace and update the school's library books and materials. n n n Sisters of the Circle, Jefferson Center's performing arts program for immigrant, refugee and American teenage girls, will perform "My Journey, Yours" at 3 p.m. Sunday. The 14 young women are students at William Fleming and Patrick Henry high schools and will perform the original stage production based on their own experiences. n n n Several Roanoke students were recognized May 1 as winners of the 2007 Haiku Contest for the Roanoke Valley Reading Council in conjunction with the Virginia State Reading Association Young Writers Contest. n n n A poem by Lincoln Terrace Elementary School kindergarten student Christian Brown will be published in the Young American Poetry Digest. More information can be found at www.youngpoets.org. n n n Hidden Valley High School 11th-grader Katherine Preseren was chosen to perform at the 2008 Virginia All-State Choir event April 24-26. n n n The Northside Middle School girls relay track team won their third consecutive Cosmopolitan Relays. The Cosmopolitan Relays are open to elite track and field athletes from local middle and high schools, and no female team had ever won three years in a row. The Lady Norsemen have not lost a regular season track meet since April 2004. n n n Three Roanoke County Public Schools bus drivers will advance to the state bus rodeo after winning first place in one of three categories at the regional level. Greg Lampert will advance in the conventional bus category, Marie Pratt will advance in the transit bus category, and Linda Turner will advance in the special needs bus category. n n n Arnold R. Burton Technology Center earned more awards than any other school in the state in the 2008 SkillsUSA state conference, according to a news release from Roanoke County Public Schools. Thirty-eight Burton students won 66 medals and ribbons, and 14 students qualified to represent Virginia at the SkillsUSA national conference in Kansas City, Mo., from June 24 to 27. n n n Health Focus of Southwest Virginia will offer $15 sports physicals to students entering grades six through 12 in the 2008-09 academic year. The event is being held at Roanoke Catholic school, but contact your child's school to arrange participation. The students are 15 to 18 years old and speak English. Each student is fully insured, brings personal spending money and expects to help with household responsibilities and be included in family activities.
