ArchiveStudents from the William Byrd High School theater department returned Monday night from a trip to New York City. The William Byrd Players were selected to perform a 20-minute piece based on "School House Rocks, Live!" Before they left Thursday, they raised more than $20,000 for their trip. In addition to performing their show on a Broadway stage, the students attended clinics and saw a Broadway production of the musical "Grease." n n n Masonry students from the Arnold R. Burton Technology Center are volunteering today in Salem. The students will be installing engraved bricks along a pathway leading to the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce Foundation office. The honorarium bricks were sold for $75 to companies and individuals, and proceeds from the sales will benefit the Carriage House restoration project. n n n Northside High School junior Zack Irby placed second in the national division for the 2007-08 National Career Development Month Poster Contest. He received first place in his school, district and state divisions, and his poster will be on display at the 2008 National Career Development Association Global Conference in Washington, D.C., from July 9 to 11. The theme of this year's poster and/or poetry contest was "Find Your Voice ... Change Your World." n n n Roanoke County Public Schools has received two awards as a result of budgeting and finance. The county's 2006-07 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report won a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. In addition, the Budget and Finance Department of Roanoke County Public Schools was awarded the Meritorious Budget Award by the Association of School Business Officials International for excellence in preparation and issuance of the 2007-08 budget. n n n The Virginia Lottery is holding a competition for "Super Teachers" designed to honor Virginia public schoolteachers who excel in serving their students, schools and communities. Eligible teachers must be teaching classes in kindergarten through 12th grade in Virginia and will be judged on passion, commitment, creativity and more. Any adult, including parents, colleagues and former students 18 or older, may nominate a teacher by submitting a short essay with a nomination form found at www.valottery.com along with complete rules. Nominations must be postmarked by midnight Friday to Virginia Lottery, Super Teacher Awards, 900 E. Main St., 13th Floor, Richmond, VA 23219. One grand prize winner from the Roanoke region will be selected to receive a $2,000 check and an additional $2,000 in school supplies. n n n The Virginia Board for People with Disabilities is accepting applications for delegates to the 2008 Youth Leadership Forum, a training opportunity for high school students who have shown leadership capability. The program accepts 25 students to act as delegates and works to teach leadership development, career awareness, teamwork and technology. Eligible applicants must currently be in 10th or 11th grade, have a disability as defined by the Americans with Disability Act, have demonstrated leadership potential and live in Virginia. The forum takes place July 14 to 18 at Christopher Newport University in Newport News. Scholarships that cover transportation, room and board, activities and all medical care and assistance are awarded to delegates. The application deadline has been extended to Friday.
