ArchiveThe Virginia Lottery is holding a competition for "Super Teachers" designed to honor Virginia public school teachers who excel in serving their students, schools and communities. Eligible teachers must be currently teaching classes in kindergarten through 12th grade in Virginia and will be judged on passion, commitment, creativity and more. Any adult, including parents, colleagues and former students 18 or older, may nominate a teacher by submitting a short essay with a nomination form found at valottery.com along with complete rules. Nominations must be postmarked by midnight April 11 to Virginia Lottery, Super Teacher Awards, 900 E. Main St, 13th Floor, Richmond, VA 23219. One grand prize winner from the Roanoke region will be selected to receive a $2,000 check and an additional $2,000 in school supplies. n n n Art students from the Roanoke Valley are called to take part in an Art Club Roundtable for High School Students at the Art Museum of Western Virginia from 5:30 to 7 p.m. April 10. Students are invited to share art experiences, learn about art-related careers, view the work of fellow art students and the art museum's latest exhibit. Pizza and beverages will be served at this free event. n n n Members of the William Fleming and Patrick Henry High chapters of DECA, a student marketing association, competed in the State Leadership Competition, and three are now able to represent their schools at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Atlanta this month. Friedrich Reid, a Fleming senior at the Lawson Center, won first place in food marketing. Ben Quinn and Marcus Yancey, juniors at Gibboney Technical Center at PH competed as a team in the decision-making event in Internet marketing. Out of 35 competing teams, Quinn and Yancey finished in the top three. n n n Patrick Doherty and Haley Harry, both students at William Fleming High School, along with four students from Singapore competed at the F1 in Schools Collaborative 2008 World Championships. In order to compete in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the team was charged with designing, building and racing a model-size Formula 1 race car powered by a carbon dioxide cartridge. In addition to building the car and giving an oral presentation to a panel of judges, they also produced a design portfolio to document the process and a high-quality display booth. n n n A team of Roanoke fifth graders took first place in Division I of the Odyssey of the Mind regional competition held at Franklin County High School on March 8. Four team members are students at Fishburn Park Elementary School and the fifth is a student at Crystal Spring Elementary School.
