The spirit of giving, new leaders taking charge of organizations and groups seeking applications for scholarships and community grants are spotlighted this Christmas Day.

While the spirit of giving and helping is still prevailing, the Greater Roanoke Valley Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure invites individuals and groups to register to participate in the area's first 5K run/walk and one-mile fun run.

The Race for the Cure event will be April 10 and is designed to raise awareness about breast cancer and funds for research. It will be held at Green Hill Park in Roanoke County.

For more information and to register, go to www.komenroanoke.org and click "register" underneath "Race for the Cure."

The Komen for the Cure races have attracted more than 1.5 million participants annually across the United States.

According to an e-mail news release, 75 percent of the net income stays in the communities where the event is held; the rest is used to fund breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific conferences around the world.

The Greater Roanoke Valley Affiliate participates in local breast health and breast cancer awareness projects in a 19-county service area.
