Second Lt. Heather Mundy of the Air Force Medical Corps has been admitted to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, considered the "Phi Beta Kappa for medical schools."
Mundy is a fourth-year medical student at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, a school run by the federal government designed to prepare graduates for service to the U.S. at home and abroad in the medical corps.
Mundy, also a member of Phi Beta Kappa, graduated summa cum laude from Virginia Tech, receiving bachelor's degrees in biology and psychology in 2005.
The daughter of Ken and Lucy Mundy of Roanoke, Mundy was the 2002 salutatorian at Patrick Henry High School, where she also attended the Roanoke Valley Governor's School.

The Salvation Army of Roanoke has extended the application deadline for its Christmas assistance program to Nov. 30.
Anyone experiencing financial hardship and needing assistance with food, clothing and children's toys for the holiday season should apply at The Salvation Army Community Center, 724 Dale Ave. S.E., Mondays and Tuesdays at 9 a.m.
Applicants must bring a picture identification card; Social Security cards for everyone in the household; birth certificates for children ages 12 and younger; proof of income and expenses; children's ages and clothing sizes; and a letter explaining the need for help. Army Reserve Spec. Christopher Doupnik has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla., as an honor graduate and received a letter of commendation.
A Joint Hometown News Services release said Doupnik's "attention to detail, appearance, cooperative spirit, military bearing, and military courtesy were commendable and exemplary and contributed to the Battery Cadre of the 19th Field Artillery Regiment's successful mission accomplishments."
Doupnik, an interior electrician, is the son of Kathleen and Dennis Doupnik of Roanoke.
He graduated in 2000 from William Byrd High School and earned a bachelor's degree in 2005 from Carson-Newman College.
