Four Roanoke Valley women attended the recent "SisterSpeak" luncheon in Washington, D.C.

Sponsored by Ebony magazine and the makers of Pine-Sol, the series of luncheons celebrate "the unique sisterhood of African-American women." Inspirational speakers share words of wisdom and encouragement and provide guidance to empower attendees, according to EbonyJet.com.

Pat Henry and Mary Lee Cabbler of Roanoke and Sereina Paynter and Claudine Langhorne of Bedford were among the 350 who received free tickets for the event Aug. 29 at the Willard InterContinental hotel.

Since 2007, the luncheons have attracted more than 2,500 guests.

The founders of four Washington-area organizations were honored as unsung heroes and "described as powerful women making a powerful change," Henry said. Author the Rev. Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook also addressed the luncheon.

Several Roanoke Valley residents completed military training during the late summer while another resident is being sent overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Army National Guard Sgt. Lisa Easter, who has eight years of military service, has been activated for deployment to assist in rebuilding Iraq's infrastructure and training Iraqi security forces.

Easter, a military police member, is normally assigned to the 229th Military Police Company in Virginia Beach.

Easter is the daughter of Joseph and Diana Easter of Roanoke. She graduated in 1987 from Patrick Henry High School and received an associate degree from the National College of Business and Technology in 2005.

While Easter was readying for deployment, about 150 soldiers from the Manassas-based 266th Military Police Company returned to a demobilization station at Camp Shelby, Miss., on Sept. 21 after serving in Iraq since December.
