Even though the Ukrop's Super Market in Roanoke is closing, the store is honoring a commitment to a community service project.

Ukrop's will continue its Pint for a Pint project with the Appalachian Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross to give a sweet treat to all who donate blood.

From now until the store closes Oct. 24, blood donors will be given a coupon redeemable for a pint of Haagen Dazs ice cream at Ukrop's.

"Giving blood is one of the best things you can do for our community," Jason Woodcock, general manager of the Roanoke Ukrop's, said in a news release.

"With Pint for a Pint, there's now even more incentive to help others in need while enjoying a sweet reward for your efforts," he said.

The Appalachian blood center has a goal of bringing in 800 blood donors a month to its Church Avenue Southwest facility, said Bob Lutjen, regional marketing manager for Appalachian Blood Services.

The blood center is constantly seeking partnerships with community-spirited businesses and organizations and looking for ways to make it easier and more attractive for people to give blood, he said.

Ukrop's, Lutjen said, "is helping to provide humanity in the community, and we are helping attract donors into the store."

Pint for a Pint comes on the heels of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, which is every September. The Red Cross is partnering with other groups and families affected by childhood cancer to create awareness of the disease.

Cancer patients frequently need blood transfusions and products, Lutjen said.

The Appalachian center provides blood services for 46 counties in Virginia and West Virginia.

To donate at the blood center, 352 Church Ave. S.W. in Roanoke, call 985-3535 or (800) 553-6735, or go to www.arcgiveblood.org to find a blood drive.
