Matthew Hartman, a 2009 William Fleming High School graduate, has received a Pamplin Leader Award from Virginia Tech.
The one-year tuition scholarship is presented annually to a top student from each public high school in Virginia. Robert B. Pamplin Sr., a member of the Tech Class of 1933, and Robert B. Pamplin Jr. established the scholarship to acknowledge students with outstanding academic achievement.
Hartman, who is an engineering student, is the son of Karen Simmons and Barry Hartman, both of Roanoke.

Michaela Gazdik, a Ferrum College assistant professor of molecular biology, has received a $100,000 grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to study the gene structure of certain bacteria.
The three-year grant will give Gazdik's students an opportunity to participate in independent research projects and scientific research conferences around the country.
They will study gene regulation in a harmless bacterium that is closely related to the pathogenic bacterium linked to tuberculosis.

Brian Gillespie, a student at George Mason University, has graduated from the four-week Army Reserve Officer Training Corps' Leader's Training Course at Fort Knox, Ky.
The course is a leadership internship where college cadets can experience and examine the Army without obligating themselves to serve in the Army or ROTC.
Gillespie is the son of David Gillespie of Roanoke and Dee Gillespie of Salem and is a 2007 graduate of Salem High School.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Christina Casey, a 2008 graduate of Franklin County High School, recently completed the eight-week Navy basic training course at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
Casey is the daughter of Sharon and John Casey of Moneta.

Air Force Airman Bryant Anderson has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Anderson is son of Kerry Compton and Sally Anderson, both of Roanoke, and is a 2006 graduate of Salem High School.

Army Spec. Reza Kavoosi has graduated from nine weeks of basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
Kavoosi's wife, Britney, is the daughter of Roy Greenland of Vinton.

Army ROTC Cadet Russell Christopher, son of Jean Christopher of Roanoke, recently spent time in Guyana as part of a nation-building and humanitarian exercise called New Horizons.
Christopher and more than 200 service members provided medical and dental care and built schools and other community facilities to aid the people of the poverty-stricken nation.
Christopher assisted with administrative and supervisory duties and helped with construction. He also learned basic plumbing, carpentry and masonry.
New Horizons has provided aid to underserved areas throughout Central and South America for 25 years.
