The Thursday Morning Music Club, which sponsors three junior music clubs, has awarded scholarships and cash awards to students for the 2008-09 school year.

The music club annually receives a grant from the Melva P. Jones Foundation of the Foundation for Roanoke Valley and relies on fundraisers and donations for its scholarships and cash awards.

Jessica Wang of the Virtuoso Club and Dylan Summers of the Foot Notes each received $1,000 scholarships from the club.

The music club, which has given more than $116,000 to student musicians during its lifespan, also gave $5,075 in cash awards.

Virtuoso Club award winners: Rachel Hall, $325; Justin Hall, $325; SuElllen Li, $250; Rachel Socher, $200; Shanon Haines, $200; Mimi Pham, $150; Laura Hall, $150; and Hazel Lindahl, $100.

Whole Notes award recipients: Joanne Wang, $225; Mary Socher, $125; Emily Adkins, $75.

Foot Notes award recipients: Bria Gepitulan, $200; Courtney Hood, $200; Kate Oborn, $150; Rachel Lawson, $125; Amelia Sunnen, $125; Sarah Francisco, $75; Tiffany Lawson, $75.

Army 1st Lt. Michael Moorman has graduated from the infantry basic officer leader course at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.

Moorman, an infantry officer, is the son of Roger Moorman and Jonnie Charles, both of Roanoke.

He graduated from Lord Botetourt High School in 2003 and received a degree from the Virginia Military Institute in 2007.

Army National Guard Pvt. Stuart Lynch has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.

Lynch is the son of Janine Parsons of Roanoke and a 2000 graduate of Northside High School.

Airman Janay Poindexter has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

She is the daughter of Germaine Poindexter and Tyler Poindexter, both of Roanoke, and is a 2005 graduate of William Fleming High School.

Army Sgt. Sarah Hawley has been promoted to the rank of sergeant.

Hawley, a paralegal specialist and court reporter, is assigned to Department of Defense's Office of Military Commissions at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

Hawley is the daughter of Dianne and Randy Hawley of Botetourt County. She is a 2006 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School and is a student at Christopher Newport University.

Airman Toshiana Simpson has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

She is the daughter of Robin McCullough of Roanoke and Tobin Simpson of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.

Simpson graduated from William Fleming High School in 2008.
